U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek Honoring the Life of Father Gérard Jean-Juste

Miami Gardens, FL – Congressman Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL) issued the following statement honoring the life of Father Gérard Jean-Juste, a spiritual and political leader of the Haitian community in South Florida that devoted his life to human-rights of Haitian refugees in the federal courts:

"Not only did Father Jean-Juste dedicate his life and wellbeing to establishing the Haitian community in South Florida, but he always fought for refugees' and immigrants' rights—something that many were often afraid to do here in South Florida. My condolences and prayers are with his family and the entire Haitian community during this time.

"After visiting Father Jean-Juste while he was once jailed in Haiti for his political activities, I had the opportunity to experience his impassioned sermons as an advocate for the poor. This public servant and visionary overcame great obstacles, and his determination paved the path of opportunity for so many Haitian and Haitian Americans throughout the nation. Regardless of color, class, race, and national origin, his clarion call for humanity stood tall until his passing. It is comforting to know that my friend, Father Jean-Juste's legacy will endure for generations to come.

"We have most certainly lost a role model in the South Florida and Haitian community who never ceased to stop defending the rights of less fortunate Haitians. A trailblazer indeed, Father Jean-Juste opened doors of opportunities for generations after him. His promotion of common good shall continue to remind us of his everlasting symbolism of the struggle for Haitian democracy."

U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek represents the 17th Congressional District of Florida which includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. He serves as the lone Florida Democrat sitting on the House Committee on Ways and Means.
