Statement of U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek on the 25th Anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM)

WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL) today issued the following statement on Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

"This October marks the 25th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). As we celebrate twenty-five years of awareness, education and empowerment, I recognize NBCAM for remaining at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues. NBCAM is a partnership between public service organizations, private medical associations, and governmental agencies to promote proper information about breast cancer, as well as better access to screening."

"Breast cancer, like many other health concerns, is most easily treated when caught early. As a public servant, I will continue to advocate and support initiatives that inform the public about proper health habits and decisions. I believe strongly that an empowered and informed citizenry is key to combating diseases such as breast cancer."

"Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. In 2009, there will be an estimated 192,370 new cancer cases and 40,170 deaths. Given these statistics, it is essential to promote educational initiatives and preventive measures like regular self-examinations and regularly-scheduled visits to the doctor. Also, we must continue to encourage mammograms, which are the most effective way to identify breast cancer. Finally, alongside breast cancer education, we must continue to fund medical research that will one day help find a cure for the disease."

"As a husband, father, uncle, and a son, I continue to be inspired by the women in my family who lead the fight against breast cancer. Most importantly, we must remember that breast cancer awareness should not be confined to one month. I will continue to fight on behalf of efforts to raise awareness about this important issue."

U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek represents the 17th Congressional District of Florida which includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. He serves as the lone Florida Democrat sitting on the House Committee on Ways and Means.
