Statement of
U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL)
Regarding Miami-Dade Transit and the North Corridor Extension
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Kendrick B. Meek issued the following statement regarding Miami-Dade Transit receiving federal permission to start acquiring land for the development of the North Corridor extension which runs through Congressman Meek's congressional district.
In his statement, Meek said:
"The decision by federal authorities allowing Miami-Dade Transit to acquire land for the North Corridor extension is a step in the right direction for this vital project.
"The North Corridor extension will transform the face of public transit in northern Miami-Dade County and throughout South Florida, and open doors of economic opportunity to the residents of Miami Gardens, Opa-Locka and the surrounding communities. The North Corridor extension will ease traffic congestion in our area, and stimulate economic development in our community for generations to come.
"With gasoline prices climbing and in this age of increased environmental concern, it is going to be more expensive to get around. We have to strike the right mix of Metrorail, bus, auto, bicycle and foot transportation to meet the needs of our citizens and our businesses.
Congressman Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL) represents the 17th Congressional District which includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. He serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee.
