Statement of
U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL)
Regarding the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development takeover of the Miami-Dade Housing Agency
WASHINGTON, – Congressman Kendrick B. Meek issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development takeover of the Miami-Dade Housing Agency:
"For the past year, I have worked with leaders from Miami-Dade County and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to broker a housing agreement that stressed cooperation, not confrontation. An agreement between local and federal authorities was my objective. Unfortunately, they were not able to reach one.
"I urge HUD and Miami-Dade County not to lose sight of the big picture here. The welfare of individuals in our community with real housing needs remains the number one priority. Every day of delay because of bureaucratic infighting amounts to another day of uncertainty for people in need of housing solutions.
"Last week, I wrote Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the Chairwoman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity to hold a Subcommittee field hearing in Miami to discuss the reauthorization of HOPE VI, Section 8 voucher reform and the affordable housing crisis in South Florida. I look forward to working with the Chairwoman to conduct the necessary congressional oversight needed in Miami-Dade County.
U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek represents the 17th Congressional District of Florida which includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. He serves as the lone Floridian on the House Committee on Ways and Means, and also serves on the House Committee on Armed Services.
