Statement of U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek (D-FL) Regarding the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission Defeating a Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Weaken the Class Size Amendment
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kendrick B. Meek, who as a state lawmaker was chairman of Florida's Coalition to Reduce Class Size, issued the following statement regarding the Florida Taxation and Budget Reform Commission defeating a proposed constitutional amendment to weaken the class size amendment:
"The forces of low expectations have fought and failed since 2002 to undercut the rights of Florida's students. They have threatened to undermine the constitutional amendment Floridians approved by using carefully crafted words like 'clarify,' 'tweak,' and 'alter' to describe their ill-fated efforts. Their argument in support of weakening the class size amendment remains the same—all that has changed is the year. Today's outcome is a victory for Florida's children and a loss for Tallahassee's insiders."
U.S. Rep. Kendrick B. Meek represents the 17th Congressional District of Florida which includes parts of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. He serves as the lone Floridian sitting on the House Committee on Ways and Means and also serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
